Doctoral Information - International Student

What is a student VISA and why do I need one?

A student VISA is a temporary permit granted by and required for travel to the United States. It is valid for ten (10) days to attend a CTU symposium and travel must be completed within this time period. A separate VISA is required for each symposium you attend.

How do I obtain an I-20?

CTU Admissions will assist with I-20 requests. To do so, the following is needed:

  • You must have applied and have been accepted to CTU as a student.
  • You must have met English as a Second Language (ESL) requirements.
  • You must have made your first payment from your Student Payment Agreement.
  • You must have provided CTU Admissions with a copy of your passport.
  • You must have provided CTU Admissions with a letter of financial support / financial affidavit.

To contact CTU, tap: Contacts > Admissions in the CTU Mobile app.

What is a Financial Affidavit?

A Financial Affidavit is a statement provided to CTU Financial Aid showing sufficient funding for the initial portion of your program. This affidavit is often provided by a bank, stating the balance of your or your family member's account from where funding will come.

What is needed to meet with the US Consulate/Embassy in my area to apply for a temporary student VISA?

When calling to schedule your appointment, you will need to have received your I-20 prior to attending the appointment and you will need to bring it to the appointment. Your first payment must have been made in the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) before a VISA will be issued.

What is SEVIS?

The Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a site designed to help students traveling to the United States and helps students apply for student VISAs.

What is a SEVIS payment?

After receiving your I-20 document from CTU, you must log into SEVIS to make your first payment. This is required before the US Consulate will issue your student VISA. Each time you apply for a student VISA, you will use SEVIS to make a payment.

As an international student planning to attend a CTU symposium, for what costs am I responsible?

You are responsible for all costs, including but not limited to, travel and room and board for the duration of your stay in the U.S.

You are required to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee ($200.00 USD) in advance of each symposium in order that a new term-specific I-20 can be generated and issued.

Why does CTU not offer an I-20 for full-time study in the U.S.?

Offering the doctoral courses online allows students the flexibility of studying with CTU from outside the US. The residential component of the program requires 4 visits to the Colorado area to attend symposia for which we will provide an I-20 for temporary travel. The program is not fully residential so we do not offer a continuous I-20 for the duration of the program.

Because of the non-traditional format of CTU’s low residency program as well as the structure of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) which is designed only for traditional full-time residential programs, the University can only issue an I-20 valid for the duration of the residency. The grace period allowed under F-1 status provides students adequate travel time to arrive prior to the program and to depart the U.S. once the residency has ended. As such, international students enrolled at CTU in these low residency doctorate programs cannot remain in the U.S. between residencies under the I-20 and/or F-1 visa.

Is Optional Practical Training (OPT) available to international students?

No; OPT is not available to international students enrolled in a low residency program.

If I am a citizen of an embargoed country may I attend a CTU symposium?

You may attend as long as your address is not in the embargoed country. We are unable to ship books to these countries. For example, if you are a permanent resident in a non-embargoed country and residing there you may attend.

Why do I need to provide a NACES or AACRAO evaluation of my master's transcripts if they are from outside the US?

We require a third party evaluation of your previous graduate level education in order to ascertain whether you have met the admissions requirements around previous educational level and GPA. CTU has established a policy to work with evaluations from NACES providers and evaluations sent directly from AACRAO due to the quality of evaluation and number of choices for students.

What is required to satisfy ESL requirements?

TOEFL score of 500 for undergraduate students or 550 for nursing, graduate, and doctoral students, or 173 for the computer based exam for undergraduate students and 213 for graduate and doctoral students.

For the Internet Based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) an aggregate score of 79 for graduate and doctoral programs and 61 for undergraduate programs is required. In addition to the aggregate score requirement for the internet based test, the following minimum scores must also be met:

  • Writing: 18 for graduate, 17 for undergraduate, 19 for doctoral
  • Speaking: 18 for graduate, 17 for undergraduate, 19 for doctoral
  • Reading: 17 for graduate, 16 for undergraduate, 19 for doctoral
  • Listening: 16 for graduate, 15 for undergraduate, 19 for doctoral

What is financial aid?

Financial aid is the name used for federal, state and private resources that may help pay for college costs. Typically, financial aid consists of grants, scholarships, loans and student employment. Grants and scholarships usually do not have to be repaid. Loans must be repaid with payments usually beginning after the student is no longer enrolled at least half time. Student employment consists of opportunities for students to earn money to pay for educational expenses while attending school. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify.

To contact CTU, tap: Contacts > Financial Aid in the CTU Mobile app.

How do I apply for financial aid?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly known as the FAFSA, is the single application needed to apply for all sources of federal student aid. The FAFSA can be completed online at http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. You will need to create a studentaid.gov account to access and complete the FAFSA. If you have contributors, such as a spouse or parent, they will also need to create their own studentaid.gov account in order to complete their section, provide consent, and sign their section of the FAFSA form.

To contact CTU, tap: Contacts > Financial Aid in the CTU Mobile app.

What is the difference between a grant and a loan?

Failure to repay your loans can result in serious consequences and negatively impact your ability to obtain credit in the future.

What is an FSA ID?

A Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID is a user-selected username and password that will authenticate your identity to access your federal student aid information. This login process will be used to access the StudentAid.gov website. The FSA ID is a single sign-on process that makes applying for aid quick and easy. Remember, your FSA ID is private and should never be shared with anyone.

To contact CTU, tap: Contacts > Financial Aid in the CTU Mobile app.

How is it determined for which forms of financial aid I qualify?

There is a congressionally determined set of formulas used for assessing financial need for the Federal Student Aid programs. The process starts with the FAFSA. Once your FAFSA is submitted, a formula called the Student Aid Index (SAI) calculates your financial aid needs, and determines your eligibility, based on your completed FAFSA data. Once the SAI is established, the amount will be subtracted from the Cost of Attendance and any other financial assistance used in your enrolled program, and determines your need-based financial aid. These calculations vary each award year, based on the information you or your contributors provide on each FAFSA.

To contact CTU, tap: Contacts > Financial Aid in the CTU Mobile app.

What's the difference between a Federal Direct Loan and a private loan?

A private loan is an unsecured loan made by a lender, which may have higher interest rates and usually requires a credit check.
